What are Star Words? The use of star words is a practice connected to Epiphany and the New Year. As the Magi followed the star which led them to Jesus, this practice is also meant to help us move closer to Jesus. Each star has a word of intention on it and will be given out randomly. You are encouraged to place the star somewhere where you will see it regularly throughout the year to allow regular reflection on how God has moved in your life in connection to that word allowing the word as a lens through which you see God at work this year. While we often speak to God in prayer, star words invite us into a prayer practice of silence and contemplation, which also connect us with God’s presence. By receiving the star word at random we practice the spiritual task of receiving, trusting that God is in control rather than us.
Using Your Star Word: Add your star word to other places around your home so that you will continue to see it and reflect on it throughout the year. Get creative! You are encouraged to look up the definition of your word, even if it is one you know well. Maybe it has had different meanings throughout history or other meanings that you did not know. Does your word remind you of anything? Any memories or experiences? Does your word, or a synonym, appear in the Bible anywhere? With regular reflection on this word, begin using it in spoken prayer also. May God move in your life through this word this year and may it be a blessing to you!
